“Gentlemen, we are going to relentlessly chase perfection, knowing full well we will not catch it, because nothing is perfect. But we are going to relentlessly chase it, because in the process we will catch excellence. I am not remotely interested in just being good.”
~Vince Lombardi~

For Vince Lombardi it was football, and he always pushed himself and his team to be the best they could be. Why settle for just being good when you can be great?

In what areas of your life is good, just not enough?

Sports is often a metaphor for life and Vince’s statement is no different. In any area of life where we want to be great the best thing we can do for ourselves is to start with a picture of perfection. A strong vision will ensure we have the energy and drive to consistently perform the activities that will take us beyond mediocrity. You are way better then good! Now lets go out and prove it! You now know where to start!

“It is true that we shall not be able to reach perfection, but in our struggle toward it we shall strengthen our characters and give stability to our ideas, so that, whilst ever advancing calmly in the same direction, we shall be rendered capable of applying the faculties with which we have been gifted to the best possible account.”
~Confucius~

Perfection is attainable! Its just not sustainable. We can go out and perform certain activities perfectly today. Perhaps its a perfect sales call where you end up with an order from the prospect you have been dying to do business with. Maybe its the perfect conversation with your boss that leads to the implementation of one of your ideas within a major company initiative or better yet a raise. Maybe it is simply taking 10 minutes to write out your perfect daily agenda of the most important results you can create today. Whatever it is, you can do something perfectly.

And lets just say you don’t achieve perfection in this activity. Won’t your results be better than if you just looked to do things regularly? There is something about striving for perfection that brings out the best in us. Or as Les Brown says “Shoot for the moon and even if you miss you will land among the stars”.

So in what activity will you strive for perfection today?

“Success is a result of perfection, hard work, learning from failure, loyalty, and persistence.”
~Colin Powell~

Perfection is not sustainable but it is attainable in spurts. You can do the next task you have on your agenda perfectly. And for those task that won’t get done perfectly, just making the attempt will create better results than if you started the process with a mediocre mind set. In all our actions we must work hard, learn from our mistakes and make sure we don’t give up. Taking this approach will lead to the types of outcomes that you typically only imagine. This mindset worked for Colin Powell and will work for you and I!
